Welcome, class, to your blog!
I hope that you were all able to set up your accounts easily. The first topic for class will be created by me so that we can all get to know each other a little better. So, why did you sign up for this class? What do you hope to get out of it? Now that you've had a chance to look over the syllabus and we've had our first class, what are some things you're looking forward to (the reading list, projects, assignments, etc.)? What are you dreading? :)
Okay, everyone jump on in! I'm looking forward to a great semester.

Hey everyone! So first day down and I'm pretty pumped. I took this class because as a bio major all of my classes are hard and I didn't have anything to look forward to. This class worked out perfectly...it was the only one that would fit my schedule and I needed Fine Arts credit. I'm most looking forward to the books.... I have to read so many boring blah books for organic chem and biology that I never have time to read for fun and I love to read. Plus when I lived in PA everyone was so hyped about Wicked and I still have no idea what it's about so it'll be nice to finally get caught up. Overall, there's a lot of individual work for this class but I'm excited!!
Aubrey
p.s. I'm dreading trying to stay on top of everything...thank god for my planner.
Hello!
I took this class because my classes can be pretty demanding as a Dental Hygiene major. So like Aubrey, I wanted a class that would fit my schedule. This is my first semester in the Dental Hygiene program so I'm not sure how crazy it's going to get. But I picked a couple Honors classes and I was really interested in this one because of the variety of readings. I'm used to boring textbooks so this was going to be a good change!
I hope to get out of this class a better understanding of adaptations with novels, films, plays, etc. There are so many times where I go see a play that's based off a book or story and I don't think anything of it. I would like to be able to analyze things and appreciate them more for their purpose. I'm really looking forward to reading Wicked and seeing the play. I think it will be fun to see how they work together. One thing I am not looking forward to is my time management. I have so much stuff that I need to balance with this Honors class that has so much reading, and my other challenging courses.
I remember at Preview Night that this was once of the first classes that was presented, and I was immediately hooked. I mean, who wouldn't want to go and see Wicked as part of their class?! To my dismay, this was a 300-level class, and I knew that being a freshman, it was not correct in the line up for me to take it.
Well, as you guys probably remember, Jenny started sending out all of those emails about classes that may be canceled due to lack of enrollment, with this being one of them. I hated to hear that a class that I found so interesting was going to be canceled. So, after a few emails, here I am, and I am very excited!
Besides the perk of getting to see Wicked, the other part that drew me to this class was just the concept in general. I am a person who typically will not see a movie unless I have read the book first. It interests me to see what sort of differences occur between the two mediums.
The thing that I think I am going to find difficult is selecting what text to translate for my final project. There are SO many choices out there; I'm afraid that it will be difficult to narrow it down to one.
Hello Girls! It is kind of funny that I can say that since I haven't ever had an all girls class before. :) I have heard though, that an all girls class is not unusual in the Honors program. Anyways, I am super excited about this class! I wasn't originally planning on taking an Honors class this semester as I took two last semester, but Laura, who was in one of my honors classes last semester, let me know that the class needed a few more people in order to make. After reading the class description and realizing it counted as an art class I, like Kami, couldn't bear to let such an interesting class go down!
I am so excited to see Wicked as I have never seen a live Musical before! I am also really looking forward to the discussions we will have, they are always the highlight for me in any Honors class.
This is going to sound really silly, but the thing I am most worried/concerned about is watching 300. I have always shied away from gory movies as they tend to really bother me, so if you see me with my hands over my eyes during the movie, you will know why. =)
That's so funny I'm the exact same way Priscilla...there are def a couple parts you'll need to close your eyes. Me and gore= sitting fetal position in the kitchen with my hands over my ears. I just don't understand the point of watching movies like Saw or Hostel....naaaasstttyyyy!
I took this class because I love reading novels and watching movies. I also love reading plays and watching them performed. There is something very exciting about visualizing a story in the mind, followed by seeing how it is portrayed in other people's minds. I would like to further delve into the process of translation, for example how a two hundred page novel can be formatted into a ninety minute film.
Hi Ladies :)
Well I took this class for a number of reasons; firstly beause Kathryn is teaching it and I LOVED having her as a teacher last semester, and secondly because I am a huge musical theater fan. When I was in middle school and high school I was in every fall play and every spring musical, and it was a blast. The auditions may have been gut wrenching from time to time, but no matter how big or small my part was the experience was always unforgettable. I also did a lot of community theater when I was younger as well. Another reason I'm taking this class is because I absolutely ADORE Wicked. When I was 17, right when Wicked came out, my mother and I took a trip to NYC, and while we were there we decided to see what kinds of Broadway shows we could take advantage of while we were there. Now being that Wicked had just come out, and was a huge hit, tickets were not only practically sold out, but even the "nosebleeder" seats were close to $300 and $400. However, if you haven't been to NYC, there is a really neat secret of sorts if you're into Broadway shows: on wednesday afternoon, a lot of the shows will have these lottery drawings for their matinees that day. These theaters, Wicked included, will save the first 2 rows for the middle of the week matinees, and anyone can come and submit their name in a raffle drawing to buy 2 tickets in the first and second rows for $25 each!!!!! (needless to say thats a HUGE deal) So my mother and I went to this lottery drawing, in NYC in February (it was freezing too!) on the off chance that maybe we would get lucky. Now we got there about an hour before the drawing started, and we each submitted our names. As time passed more and more people started to show up, totalling about 350 people by the time the drawing had actually started. Seeing as how they would draw 20 names out of this thing, and there were like 350 people there, our odds weren't great but God was erally looking out for us that day. To my amazement, one of the first names drawn was my mothers!! I was so incredibly excited I couldn't even speak! Then while I was attempting not to burst, a few minutes later, my name got drawn as well!!!!! I mean needless to say the odds of that happening are astronomical, but it happened, and it made me the happiest girl in the world. While we had been waiting around for the drawing my mother and I had made friends with another mother-daughter pair from Ohio, so we gave our second set of tickets to them. It was the most amazing show I have ever seen; I think I had goosebumps for almost the entire show! To this day, I am grateful for having been able to see Wicked, with the original cast (Kristina Chenoweth, and Idina Menzel are the most incredible performers I have ever seen), and I got to see it front row!!
I apologize for the lengthy nature of this blogpost, but I just figured I would attempt to preface my excitement of seeing Wicked again by explaining why it is such an important show to me. Looking forward to a great semester!! :)
Hey everyone!
I know some of you who went to the first class might be wondering, "Who is this Kristie person?" because I missed last Tuesday's class. I actually just registered for the course today but am excited just the same. I had some last minute schedule changes, and I thought, "Why not? This course seems like fun!"
I am a bio anthro major, so science is my thing, but I'm extremely interested in many art medias. I love going to plays, ballets, and I've actually seen Wicked before (Even before I signed up for this course, I already have tickets to see Wicked here at UNM... Guess I'll be seeing it three times then!). I love to draw and have also been stretching my talents to photography. I thought that this class would be a perfect way for me to freely express myself.
I look forward to the many projects we get to do, and especially look forward to the final project.
I am a quite person, but I am a great listener. I might not always speak in class, but I plan to express myself through art!
Sorry I could not meet you all on the first day, but I look forward to seeing you this coming Tuesday!
Kristie
Hi girls! I'm so excited to be in this class because all of the books seem to be good reads. I find it interesting that there is a class on how one form of art is translated into another, great idea! I have always been interested in theatre and acting and I feel like this class will add to my understanding of literature and theatre in general. I'm on my way to becoming an architecture major, and the requirements to even join the college are intense! I'm calling this my fun class, one because it sounds like an exciting course and two because there is no math involved! (: Yea there is a lot of work to do and tons of interesting books to explore but it comes with being an honors class right? I'm really looking forward to reading all of the poem books, and learning to appreciate them more seeing as I'm not a big fan of poetry!
I quite possibly took this class because of Wicked (well, and the rest of the reading list as well—I love The Phantom of the Opera—but I’ve wanted to see Wicked ever since one of my best friends saw it in London two years ago). Really, upon reading the course description and reading list, I realized that this sounded like an absolutely fascinating class and was instantly excited. I love to read and I love to sit and be mildly irritated by film adaptations of things that I have read. Also, as several other people have expressed, I wanted, very badly, to have a class that I really could look forward to every week.
I am thoroughly excited by the prospect of the final project. I keep coming up with all sorts of ideas about what I could do, even though I haven’t come close to deciding on something yet.
Hey Ladies,
I'm super excited for this class. I decided to take it because it sounded like a great opportunity for me to reintegrate with my artistic side. Well the little I have, anyways. It seems like I have lost it with all the science and math courses that I have been taking. Like a lot of you, I can't wait for the Wicked performance. Even before I signed up for the class, I had already planned on going.
I am really looking forward to reading Phantom of the Opera. Ever since I watched the remake, with Gerard Butler ;), I have been wanting to read the book, but I just haven't had a chance. Now I'll have no choice :) I'm also looking forward to the poetry part of this class! The last time I read or studied poetry was probably in the seventh grade!
I am not necessarily dreading the final translation project, but I am a little nervous on what I'll be choosing. Thankfully I have plenty of time to make a decision.
I am SO excited to read again!! That was my primary reason for deciding to take this class. I used to read a novel a week, but in the last year or so I've been so busy with school and work that the only chance I get to pick up a great fiction book is over the winter break and that's sad. This class gives me a great excuse to read books with real plotlines and characters (grrr textbooks). I've already read Wicked, but it's been a while so I'm excited to read it again and even more thrilled that we'll get to see the play. Unlike everyone else, I'm up to my ears in fine arts credits, but I couldn't help but take this class anyway. I'm a little apprehensive about this semester in general, a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it.
The second this class was presented at preview night I knew I just HAD to fit it into my schedule somehow. I've been dying to see Wicked forever it seems.(I wish Idina Menzel was still playing Elphaba though. I just love Idina Menzel!)
Anyways...I'm looking forward to the creativity that honors classes always seems to bring out of everyone. Honors classes have such a different dinamic than regular classes which is something I find to be very refreshing after beating my head against my Anthropology textbook for hours on end. I can't wait to get started and I'm super pumped for the final project although I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to end up doing.
There is but one fly in the ointment for me: I absolutly hate "The Crucible" always have, always will, and being someone that prizes the written word so highly that is not a claim I make lightly. I can't stand it so I apologize, in advance, for my pessimism towards it. Other than that I'm looking forward to the wonderful discussions I'm positive we're all going to have.
When I was signing up for classes last semester, I was squeezed into a narrow set of classes that I was required to take in order to graduate on time. For honors I had to take a 400 level class, preferably one that helped knock out some group requirements. Unfortunately, my schedule was inflexible and there was only one class that fit. I signed up reluctantly because it was a topic I was not particularly interested in. At the time, I was seeing Kathryn every week for another class, and she told me about the Art of Translation, and how they were worried that the class wouldn't make. I was interested in the class, and by taking it as and Independent Study with some extra work, we figured out a way for me to get 400 level credit.
I am very excited about the various assignments and projects for this class. Like many of the other students said, I don't get much time to work on artistic projects of my own and I look forward to pushing myself.I also look forward to class discussions because psych classes often contain up to 600 students and I rarely get to hear and benefit from other student's ideas and opinions.
As everyone heard in class, I'm dreading the blog because I always forget Internet deadlines, but I can suck it up :P Plus I enjoy reading everyone else's comments. Thanks to Tara for the advice about tickets. That might be useful next time I'm in New York :)
Hi everyone!
I'm really excited for this class, for many of the same reasons as everyone else. I think all of the reading choices sound fantastic, and will be a nice break from the "dry" texts I have in other classes. I have to admit though, the big hook for this class is Wicked. I've been a Wizard of Oz fan since I was little, and when I first heard about Wicked I was really curious about it, but never had the chance to read the book or go see it on stage.
I took this class because not only would it fulfill another honors class and a fine arts credit but i believe that i will truley enjoy the class. I am looking forward to the books especially the poetry ones.
This class is opportunity for me to be creative since i don't really get to do that in my political science and sociology classes. I think that thing that i am looking forward to the most is seeing WICKED it is one of my favorite shows. I had the opportunity to see it on Broadway in new york when i was 14 and fell in love with it. When i heard it was coming here i was excited but didn't know if i would get the chance to see it. So when i signed up for the class and found out that we were going i must say that i was very excited.
I am dreading reading the crucible again because i really do not enjoy that book at all but all will be well.
I really am looking forward to this class and can't wait for what is coming ahead.
