Owl City - Fireflies - ASL Song

The earlier post about Deaf poetry got me thinking about music and I felt the urge to share this video with those of you who might be interested. Altough signed music can sometimes be a touchy subject, it can also be very beautiful. This is "Fireflies" by Owl City, performed in sign language by Stephen Torrence.

So i can honestly say I've never seen sign "singing". I actually got into it!! I think it really helped that there was also lyrics so that I could follow along with the signing and appreciate it rather than trying to analyze it. I noticed that when he was signing he not only used his hands but he used his body to rock to the music and dance. He also used facial expressions to show the emotion of the song such as when he signed "I'm weird cause I hate goodbyes, I got misty eyes as they said farewell". Through his body movement and facial expressions it obvious he was connected to the song and I almost expected him to bust out singing at any moment. Personally, I think the signing gives an added element to the song.... a type of visual beauty along with the pleasantry of the music. Thank you for posting this!

I wonder why you said signing to music was a touchy subject? It's funny because I totally do this in the car with my Deaf friends. Most of them love music, particularly when the bass is amped up because it has the strongest vibrations.

I liked the very beginning of the song when the man was interpreting the music without lyrics. He did a very good job of representing the different sounds with both his hands. One of the women from "Sweet Honey in the Rock" also does this when the lyrics stop, and she is able to translate with incredible feeling. It's very impressive.

This is amazing, simply amazing. AWESOME FIND.
Like Aubrey, I have never seen sign language singing. I think it brings out a more emotional side, especially to this song. I feel bad in saying this, but I must be honest. I had ALWAYS thought that music is something deaf people cannot fully enjoy. I then read Candace's comment about vibrations and felt sheepish. I am glad that you posted this. What I am learning is that this class is opening my mind and heart to a lot of different ideas. This being one of them.
